One Shot Shinsengumi

There are many, many Shinsengumi manga. A popular format is the anthology, where the work of many artists are compiled into a single volume. Here we’ll share a few of our favorites, both single-author and anthology.

- Bakumatsu Roman Ibun by Hozumi Yuki, published by Shueisha Ribon Comics, 2000. ISBN 4088562208. A sweet, light-hearted tale of a girl torn between Okita Souji and Saitou Hajime. But it’s not so much of the focus on the series...

- Shinsengumi Kondou-Kun, Anthology, published by Gakken, 2004. ISBN 4056035156. A collection of comedy/gag manga focusing on Kondou Isami. Wacky anachronisms, discussions on fish and fashion, and lots and lots of crazy hijinks. Art is mostly good, and there’s lots of cuteness.

- Shinsengumi Anthology, Anthology, published by Koei, 1999. ISBN 4877197567. Primarily serious, character-driven stories, with some 4-koma gags and novels to break it up. The art quality is not the best. ^__^;;

- Shinsengumi Anthology Mibu Shinryokuten, Anthology, published by KTC Anthology Comics, 2004. ISBN 4860320867. Mix of dramatic and comedic stories, and the art ranges from good to not so good. Some light BL/yaoi tones, but it’s more of the “love confession” variety than the getting naked variety.

- Shinsengumi Anthology Miburo Enbu, Anthology, published by Action Comics Futubasa, 2003. ISBN 4575938718. Primarily dramatic works, some lighter in tone. Good artwork overall, features a mini-poster of Kondou, and the first four pages of the first story are in color.

- Shinsengumi Anthology Shidou Kokoroe, Anthology, published by Daito Comics, 2004. ISBN 4886534678. Mix of dramatic stories and comedic stories, and features some really good art. Included are four color pages.

- Shinsengumi Dandara Retsuden, Anthology, published by Jive, 2003. ISBN 490231410X. The cover looks so normal, you expect the usual sorts of stories... but you would be wrong. This book contains not only zany comedy, but some of the oddest examples. It’s simply wonderful! See our section for a story from this anthology about what happens after Serizawa is assassinated... *quack, quack*. Art is good but there’s lots of stylistic shifts. Four color pictures which, like the cover, are a lot more serious and conventional than the stories.
