As some of us know these men did not formally start out as the Shinsengumi nor did they end in that name. Most accept that the Shinsengumi started with a group of men breaking up from the Roshigumi that was ill-formed by Kiyokawa Hachiro. They will not be given the name “Shinsengumi” (Newly Selected Group) and will be known instead as “Miburoshi” (their headquarters was in Mibu village in the Yagi and Maekawa residence) until they have proven themselves worthy enough to be acknowledged by the Kyoto Protector, Matsudaira Katamori, Daimyo of Aizu and be officially sanctioned as a police force for the Bakufu. They will not retain the name however, using instead the Koyou Chibuntai (Pacification Corps) during their decline and inevitable end, at least in history.
